How RecipeSesame handles your data. Last updated June 23, 2026.
At a glance
- Your account and recipes are stored in the European Union, in a database in Frankfurt, Germany.
- Recipes are read and structured by Mistral AI, a French company, in the EU.
- No ads, no trackers, no third-party analytics. We don't sell your data or use it to train AI.
- You can use the app as a guest, without giving us an email.
Two of the companies we rely on, Cloudflare and Supabase, are based in the United States. What that means for your data is covered under “Where your data lives” below.
Who we are
RecipeSesame is a small app for saving and organising recipes. We decide how your data is used, which in legal terms makes us the data controller. If you have a question or want to make a request, email hello@recipesesame.app.
What we collect
To start, nothing. A guest session is just a random ID, with no email or name attached.
If you sign in with Google, we receive your email address and the display name on your Google profile.
As you use the app you create content: recipes, collections, notes, and the labels you add (including the names under “People”). It's yours, and you can edit or delete it whenever you like.
Like any website, our hosting providers automatically record your IP address, basic browser and device details, and requests to the server. We use this to run the app and keep it secure.
Why we use it
We use your data to provide the app you asked for, which is our contract with you. We use technical data to keep the service running and prevent abuse, which is our legitimate interest. Where we ask for your consent, such as signing in with Google, you can withdraw it at any time.
Where your data lives
Your account and recipes are stored in the European Union, in a database hosted in Frankfurt, Germany.
Two of our providers are US companies: Supabase, which runs the database and accounts, and Cloudflare, which serves the website. Even though the data itself sits in the EU, a US company can in some cases be required to disclose data under US law. Where data leaves the EU, the transfer relies on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. We plan to move to EU-based infrastructure as the app grows.
Who we share it with
We work with a small set of providers to run the app. We don't share your data with anyone else, and we never sell it.
When you import a recipe from a web page, TikTok or YouTube, we fetch that public page to read it, the same as opening the link in your own browser.
How we use AI
When you import a recipe, whether from a link, pasted text or a photo, its content is sent to Mistral AI in France to pull out the ingredients, steps and other details. That is the only thing it's used for. We don't use your content to train AI, and Mistral handles it under its own terms.
Cookies and local storage
We use one cookie, to remember whether you prefer light or dark mode. Everything else lives in your browser's local storage: your login, your settings, and a cache of recipes so the app loads quickly and works offline. There are no advertising or tracking cookies and no third-party analytics, so there's nothing to consent to.
How long we keep it
We keep your data for as long as your account exists. Guest sessions are deleted automatically after a period of inactivity. You can delete individual recipes in the app, or delete your whole account from Settings. Deleting the account removes your recipes, collections, plan, shopping list and photos immediately, and it cannot be undone.
Your rights
If you're in the EU or UK, you can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, get a copy to take elsewhere, or object to how we use it. To do any of these, email hello@recipesesame.app. If you think we've handled your data badly, you can also complain to your national data protection authority. You do not have to ask us to delete your account: Settings, Delete account does it yourself, straight away.
Children
RecipeSesame isn't aimed at children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your data, we'll update this page and the date at the top, and flag anything important inside the app.
